In celebration of Women’s Month, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) College of Accountancy and Finance Student Council held a powerful and eye-opening event, “Sayaw, Nene: The Realities of Labor Workforce for Women,” last March 28, 2025, at the CAF AVR. Headed by John Rey De Vera with the Co-head Althacia Angeles, the program shed light on the realities and ongoing struggles faced by women and marginalized sectors in the labor force, sparking conversations on gender inequality,  the systemic workplace issues, and the call for collective empowerment.

Hosted by Sharina Dela Cruz, Sayaw, Nene featured two seasoned activists and women’s rights advocates: Ms. Rojemie Rabino and Ms. Angel Teresa. Both speakers brought their own experiences and expertise, offering attendees insight into the deep-rooted issues that continue to affect women and LGBTQ+ individuals.

Rabino emphasized the importance of policy reforms and consistent advocacy to combat discrimination in labor. She boldly declared, “Para mapalaya ang ari, palayain muna ang uri,”  emphasizing the need to liberate not just individual identities but also social classes through systemic change.

Teresa, on the other hand, tackled the harsh societal expectations placed on women and the persistent culture of disrespect toward them. She addressed not only the biases dictating how women should behave but also brought attention to the alarming prevalence of rape and sexual violence affecting not just women but also members of the LGBTQ+ community.

As the program concluded, organizers reiterated that “Sayaw, Nene” is not just a Women’s Month celebration but a call to action, the forum urged institutions and individuals alike to work together in pushing for equal rights,

And through initiatives like this, PUP continues to lead the charge in fostering inclusive and socially aware environments, ensuring that the voices of women and the marginalized are amplified, recognized, and never silenced. Women, like any other species, can thrive and achieve greatness in all aspects of society.

Sayaw, Nene.
